The event concept begins with an artist creating a work of art in 3 days; the artwork is passed on to a writer who pulls inspiration from the piece and creates a written piece which is then passed on to the next artist as inspiration for their piece…etc. Each person has 3 days. For the past 2 months a group of writers and artists participated. Last night the project was displayed and each written piece was performed in succession by someone other than the writer. LizAnn attended the event a year ago with her friend Lara…and together they suggested to the event coordinator that the art form missing from the event was movement/dance performance. The event coordinator asked Lara months ago if she wanted to participate. Lara and LizAnn collaborated a few weeks ago and a video of their performance was played as part of the art progressive event last night.

We arrived at the venue after a fine dinner with a dozen friends. We rolled from the restaurant down the street (literally…since the curbs in Livingston are not handicap friendly…one of the many things I never noticed before but am so aware of now). The event was held in a local bar/dance club…upstairs…! After inquiring with the bartender, we were taken to the freight elevator by the owner. Large alarming signs announced “Freight Elevator -- NO people allowed!” The bar tender warned us that the elevator was “SCARY” and she hadn’t exaggerated. It was an open shaft with a big old chain and worn wood. Squeaking and groaning, the elevator slowly raised us as the owner operated it from above. I kept the chain from hitting LizAnn…we laughed and talked our way up the thing. Felt like we were in some old movie…and I half expected to see the Phantom of the opera or Lefou peering from the shaft above. Once upstairs we enjoyed socializing with dozens of friends. The event was well attended with standing room only. During LizAnn and Lara’s video portion of the evening I fought tears sprung from pride at the beauty, bravery and life LizAnn emanates in her performance just six months since her accident. Their contribution was a real crowd pleaser…enthusiastic clapping and hooting and hollering from the audience. So here’s the neat part: You can view the video of LizAnn and Lara’s performance on You Tube by following the link below. The video was played on the big screen in much higher quality than you’ll see on You Tube but you can get an idea of their creativity and art.
If you have feedback then I encourage you to direct it toward LizAnn directly via phone or e-mail. I will forward to LizAnn any e-mail that comes to me as well.

Enjoy!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-tFyMm_A-N4

Inaugeration Bash

LizAnn and friends were out celebrating the night of the inauguration at a packed private venue. I pushed her through the crowd when they replayed Obama’s speech on a big screen. She had missed the speech earlier in the day so we shared those joyous moments, me crouched behind her, arms around her. Afterwards, a young girl curiously and a bit shyly approached LizAnn to check out her chair. LizAnn asked little Ruby if she wanted up on the chair and after a shy but excited nod, LizAnn pulled her up and spun her around for a little ride on the edge of the dance floor. Once Ruby was done with her ride (I believe she would have been happy sitting there all night!) LizAnn and I began dancing on the edge of the dance floor. A handsome fella she didn’t know, approached LizAnn, grabbed her arms and began spinning her around. They danced the rest of the song. We danced and danced…at one point she yelled over the music, “Help me get in front of the stage! I’ve always danced center-stage…why stop now?!” So…we bumped our way to the front where we continued dancing, song after song…various men, lots of girlfriends, me, her sister Jane, and JoJo (the fella who broke her fall and spent the night on Mt Cowen with her)…each taking turns dancing with that beautiful woman.

New Year - A New Home

LizAnn spent the first night of the new year in her recently remodeled home. She is still settling into the new space, unpacking and getting herself set up there. Many people volunteered countless hours to the project. Peter Belschwender from On Site Management headed up the remodel. He performed an impressive job of keeping the project organized…setting a schedule and meeting deadlines. He also spent a big chunk of the last few months working on the place. His dedication and selfless service was key to the progress and realization of adapting LizAnn’s home to her new lifestyle. We are in awe of the kindness everyone has shown…your efforts are a testament to a caring community…her home a work of love…DEEPLY appreciated. LizAnn sends heartfelt thanks to all.

All Caring community activities (meals, shoveling, etc.) will now take place at her residence on 222 E. Such an amazing group of friends and gathering of our community. I was so overwhelmed that day I walked into the house and saw 15 or so people painting and continue to be overwhelmed with tears of gratitude and love. I can hardly believe the generousity of time and skills and favours that you all have offered me. The remodel of my house is beautiful and cool and uplifting. It is the most tangible of gifts. There are are gifts that are not as obvious, such as the wonderful, heart warming letters, the tastey meals and treats, the professional advice, and the thoughtful gifts over the last few monthes.
My heart has grown so large and I feel so very blessed by everbody's efforts.

It has been hard for me to thank everyone individually as I would like to because my tolerance for sitting at the writting desk or computer is limited by comfort and some pain. I still need my rest and that is still a hard thing for me to schedule into the day. I find that now that I am back in Bozeman, I have been trying to keep my old schedule of doing toooo much. Or just more than is good for me right now.
One of the many lessons I am trying to honor is to slow down. It is a hard one! But, I better get it down, cause it is how I am going to need to live life for a while. When I think about it, it is a wonderful process, to slow dow, we can savor moments and interactions with our friends. We can savor our food and wine. We can feel. We can feel more than we ever thought. We can realize our blessings. We can become perhaps more effective. So that is one( of many) of my new year resolutions, to slow down. Hopefully that will give me more
clairity on life and lifes offerings and choices. Hopefully I will become more complete by actually choosing instead of saying yes to everything. I will learn to choosen the more important things to do and focus on. I encourage you all to remind me anytime and to join me in some savory slowness!
As soon as I am settled I would love to invite ya all over to enjoy the new pad with me and share in some food and drink and let me appreciate you...of coarse it won't be any time too soon....
Now I will get back to some less enjoyable paperwork!!!
peace and good cheer to all of you

LizAnn

Solstice Celebration

I am just about to turn in after a lovely Solstice Celebration with girlfriends on a crispy cold winter’s eve here at my humble cabin home. Livingston town lights below twinkle like a Christmas card complete with fine ice-crystal sky which frosts everything in a winter night softness. Twelve beautiful women gathered (minus one… who unfortunately got in a fender-bender on the way here and decided to return home). Homemade taco soup (kind of like chili) made with antelope was served. Other extra yummy goodies, hot buttered rum, wine and chocolate truffles added to the festivity.

We held a ritual to honor the darkness and welcome the light. We burned that which we wanted to release. We talked of loss, and hope…set intentions and made wishes. We held hands. We sang. We laughed. We shed tears.

LizAnn added her spectacular brand of cheer and insight. Today was her first visit to my cabin since the August morning I made her and Leslie breakfast and called Joe for beta before they set off for Mt Cowen. I think of the full moon night Leslie spent with LizAnn at the lake in anticipation of their climb. The morning they set out for the summit, I went for a run in Paradise Valley and blew them kisses toward the ridge where I knew they were climbing.

I think of the night Joe spent with LizAnn in the gully. The same sleepless night I brought Leslie here after the last radio transmission when we could do no more for the rescue until morning. I made the phone calls to her family and fiancé, fed Leslie and began the e-mail messages. I think of all this humble home has held…am filled with awe…and love…and gratitude.

A few days ago LizAnn and I swam laps at the heated pool. She moves beautifully with strength and grace through the water. I strapped some weights on my legs and raced her, trying to just use my arms. Phew! We spent well more than an hour executing the post-pool shower/change since these things take extra time (so we fit in extra girl chat).

She is moving into her home this week.

A journey embarked by three and punctuated by one large loose rock has been entered into and shared by so many. Tonight LizAnn spoke of how profound the love has been. Deep shifts, raw honest humble living, lots of gumption and an indomitable spirit have been gifted to all of us who share her journey. I am full of gratitude for the contribution each of you have made…even your thoughts and certainly your love have added grace.

I want to send each of you a hug in honor of the darkness life carries and a smile for the light we have shared with our beloved LizAnn.

With bright light and the promise of longer days,
Amber

Thanksgiving Gratitude

Bright Light of Community

Since the phone call from Scott Gill (Search & Rescue) at 9:45 pm on August 17 with the Olympic Relay already in progress to rescue LizAnn through today, November 27, Thanksgiving Day. So much has happened to not only LizAnn but to all of us that know her and love her. Because of you LizAnn, this community in our beautiful corner of the universe has come together for one common simplistic reason: To unconditionally help another human being. You have been not only an insipration but also a catalyst for random acts of kindness. Thank you Amber and Bobbi Jo for being the messengers and collectively providing this site and the Helping Hands site as a platform for all of us to stay informed on how we can all proactively participate. And more recently, Peter Belshwender for synthesizing all the folks who have been helping with the house renovation. I am thankful for the sense of interconnectedness we all have on this day.

Blessings and Happy Thanksgiving To All!
John Kudrna

LizAnn's HOME!

Grins, tears, hugs and joy…LizAnn is home!

Hoots and cheers erupted from the crowd of forty friends as LizAnn wheeled herself into the terminal…bright and beaming. Everyone is encouraged to come welcome her home. People who’d like to carpool to the airport can meet at the South end of the Target/BobWards/Petsmart parking lot at 3:45. We’ll update the website during that day if there are any changes or delays in the flight that we know of.
Three months have passed since the weekend of August 16th when LizAnn summated Mt Cowen and began the decent which led to a whole new journey and ascent in her life. Her homecoming is a new chapter…filled with emotion, trepidation, excitement, courage, and determination. Your presence and positive energy at the airport may be a touching and supportive re-entry to a community she loves. Your patience, compassion, enthusiasm, friendship and goodwill will continue to be of great assistance for her journey in the months and years to come.
Thank-you,
Amber Jean

Preparing for Her Return

LizAnn will be discharged from Craig Hospital today. She still has some things to do/work-out/finish up so she and her sister Jane will be moving to family housing at Craig until everything is finalized…and then she can return home and embark on the next chapter of her post-accident journey. We believe she’ll be flying home with Jane sometime mid-week next week (we’ll keep you posted).
She taught her 2nd Pilates class to staff earlier this week. Teaching is brave and empowering … a positive action in the midst of the emotional challenges during this time of transition and healing. Her body is still healing (and will be for many more months) . Though her strength increases daily, she tires easily. She is enthusiastic about swimming (photos below).
In preparation for her return next week, Bobbi Jo sent the following note about helping out:

From: Bobbi Jo

HI everyone.
A quick note about the remodel and meals at Prefix...

HOUSE REMODEL NEEDS
If there is any one in the crowd or if anyone knows of someone willing to look at the following, please let me know: PeterBelschwender@onsitemangagement.com1. As of Nov 13th we have $390 for food. I talked to the prefix people and have decided to put $235 towards meals in Nov and then do another order for meals in Dec. I found a coupon in Smart Shopper for free asembly of food. If we get another coupon prefix will honor it for Dec, so would people look for that coupon and send it to me (18139 Bridger Hollow Bozeman, MT 59715 ). Thanks so much. It is amazing how wonderful and generous people are! Her sister Jane will be leaving Wednesday to help pack up and bring LizAnn back to Bozeman. Two girlfriends visited and spent the weekend with LizAnn at Craig. They went to Pike’s Peak on Saturday...a big day for LizAnn. After an hour drive, they arrived near the peak, then rode a train to the top of the mountain. She said it felt good to be “so high up there.”
She taught her first Pilates class at Craig last week. “Chair Pilates” was attended by staff and patients alike. LizAnn found it challenging but good to “get back after it.”
Peter continues to make impressive progress with a batch of generous volunteers working together to remodel her home.
Everyone has been so beautifully supportive of LizAnn during her journey. Upon her return there will be more opportunities for people to pitch in and help out. Bobbi Jo has lined up a webpage at the “Helping Hands” site…a wonderful tool/calendar to facilitate coordination of volunteers…see below:

Helping Hands Website

HI ALL-
For those of you who have not been swinging hammers in the remodel preparation at LizAnn's house, here are some other opportunities to provide a 'helping hand'! A webpage has been created to help organize some of LizAnn's daily/weekly/monthly needs, to help her (and her family) smoothly transition and settle back into her life in Bozeman. Some general info about the website is below:

"Lotsa Helping Hands" — is a simple, immediate way for friends, family, colleagues, and neighbors to assist loved ones in need. It’s an easy-to-use, private group calendar, specifically designed for organizing helpers, where everyone can pitch in with meal delivery, rides, and other tasks necessary for life to run smoothly during times of medical crisis, necessary caring, or family caregiver exhaustion. It's also a place to keep the "circles of community" informed with status updates, photo galleries, message boards, and more. (the later will prob. be more to date on LK's web/blog site)
Visit our community 'helping hands' site for LizAnn!
To start the registration process, click on the link below, and enter your email address under “Interested in becoming a member of this community??? http://www.lotsahelpinghands.com/c/608489/

Once you've logged on to LizAnn's Helping Hands site, poke around, click on the calendar button. Any green highlighted date means there is a task looking for a volunteer to help out. below the calendar there are a list of tasks (meals, chores, cleaning, shoveling...). You can click on this as well and sign yourself up. Each task has a different leader to contact if you have questions. The site is pretty self explanatory and will send email reminders 1 month, 1 week and 1 day in advance for those tasks you signed up for! The calendar goes through December. We will let folks know when we've added tasks or when LizAnn has moved from Merry McKenney's to her own house.

On behalf of the Kudrna family and LK herself, Thank you for your thoughtful assistance AND for your patience in taking one more 'web-step'! We'll keep you posted on LizAnn's arrival date.
Bobbi jo

LizAnn's Coming Home

HI ALL-
Exciting news... our dear LizAnn should be checking out of her residence at Craig Hospital November 13th and arriving in Bozeman around November 15th (exact date/time will be announced closer to the day). She's been working hard physically and emotionally preparing herself for her long awaited return. Although after speaking with LizAnn, she's amazed how much she has been through and it's only been 3 months! Craig staff feel she's ready and has the skills and strength to return to life in Bozeman. LizAnn will be living with Merry McKenney initially, while awaiting needed permits and construction at her house.
Like most new journey's there are moments of anxiety, joy, uncertainty, confidence, etc... It's time for her friends and family to help make this transition as smooth as possible. With this in mind, will soon launch a 'helping hands' website where you can sign up to deliver meals, help with errands, shovel the walk, clean.... The website will go live as soon as we get more info from the Boss (LK herself)- hopefully this weekend. Work on the project will continue this Saturday. Contact Peter if you are inclined to pitch in and help. PeterBelschwender@onsitemangagement.com

LizAnn wrote in an e-mail today, "A big gigantic thank you to all. I am filled with love and gratitude."

Peter wrote the following project update:

"Thanks so much to everyone who helped out this past Saturday. We did get more done than I had hoped for!

Tammy, Barb and I did speak with Liz Ann on Sunday and there are a couple of headlines concerning the project and schedule.

First, we will be site constructing the Ramp at the house and not buying a premade all steel ramp, so I’ll be getting materials organized this week and we will want to be getting after that this weekend, assuming we have the go ahead from city planning.

Second, we will be waiting to close up any of the walls with drywall until Liz Ann reviews the project on the 14th or 15th. This means that we will be focusing on rerouting plumbing and electrical along with continuing to rough frame these next two weeks.

For this next Saturday the following should be happening at the house:

1. Ramp – dig for landing slab, pour concrete landing, frame upper ramp and landing, layout and start framing lower ramp, possibly start on railing.
2. Demo cast iron waste and vent pipe, reroute plumbing under bath, rough in washer supply and waste, rough in dryer vent, rough in new shower fixture.
3. Stain new doors, paint closet shelving.
4. Set door jambs and continue work on the Washer / Dryer / door to bedroom area.

Also, if there is any one in the crowd or if anyone knows of someone willing to look at the following, please let me know:
1. Refinishing the oak entry floor.
2. Laying linoleum, marmoleum, or laminate flooring in the Kitchen, Bedroom and possibly the Bathroom.

That is it for now. We ended up having "pho" for lunch (a Vietnamese noodle soup) ina hole-in-the-wall where we were the only non-Asians, and then shoppingfor interesting food in a huge Asian market -- we'll have to experimentwith some new cooking this winter! On Monday Lizann had me suit up to join her in the pool for her twiceweekly swimming workout. As you can see by the photos, this woman isDETERMINED in the pool! She has obviously been working out her upperbody, because she is strong! We experimented with some leg floatation, which really made a difference in her stroke and body position. I'm goingto investigate what other para swimmers have figured out in that area, andam really looking forward to working (out) with Lizann back in the Bozemanpools!Amy Kelley

Tragedy Strikes a Family Friend

Liz Ann’s brother John has a very good friend who was injured traumatically yesterday in a bicycle accident. Ed Farrar is an orthopedic surgeon (he operated on John’ back) and a good friend of John’s. Ed was riding his bike to work in Wenatchee yesterday morning when he was struck head-on by a motorist. He is in critical condition with a severe spine injury (higher than Liz Ann’s). Ed was a resource and sounding board for John and the family while Liz Ann was in ICU. Ed is a respected spine and neck surgeon who helped many people professionally as well as being an outstanding community member and athlete. He and John kayaked together, attended Wilderness First Responder together and are good friends. Ed continued to check with John and followed Liz Ann’s progress offering insight and advise to John, Liz Ann and the family.

We would like to ask you to include Ed and his family in your thoughts…sending them the kind of energy you continue to send Liz Ann. No more chest brace, leg brace is soon to follow suit, and so much more independent! We caught up with her on Friday morning at the start of her day. She'd already dressed herself -- quite a feat when you consider her lower body can't really pitch in and she has to wear this clunky knee brace -- and we dined on a mixture of Chez Craig vittles and her secret stash of yummy Kashi cereal and fresh press coffee. Then I got to see Craig Hospital's rehab from the eyes of a supporter rather than a patient. (For anyone who doesn't know me, I have my own spinal cord injury from a cycling accident on July 5, 2007 and spent three months at Craig myself from late July through November 1.)Both Denise and I were exhausted just watching LizAnn work out. In addition to the occupational therapy and physical therapy, she had awheelchair class where she excelled in a game called "go ball," where each team and its teammates have to wheel the ball across the "field" and then throw it into the goal. The catch is each team mate has to touch the ball before it can go into the goal. It's part soccer, basketball and hijinks played in the large gym on the first floor of Craig West. There was muchhooting and hollering and lots of wheeling back and forth. Able-bodied people were invited to join in and grab a spare wheelchair to join in on the fun. Denise and I both didn't think we could keep up -- there were a lot of fierce competitors on both teams -- so we just gamely cheered Liz Ann on.I really enjoyed getting to see Liz Ann's weight class. Back when I was at Craig, I was on the quad track and since I didn't have much in the way of upper body, there was no weight workout for me and certainly not in a fully equipped weight room.Liz Ann and her buddies worked the whole circuit in the weight room while the stereo was blaring disco tunes. I had not heard so much Donna Summers since the 1970s. Among her other feats, Liz Ann did 130 pounds on a latt pulldown bar. The idea is by the end of her stay shall be able to manipulate at least her own body weight. At this point, she could easily benchpress me!After her therapy was done for the day, we went to an Indian restaurant. Denise and Liz Ann have their own particular kind of adventure. I had already jay walked across the street -- the first time I had jay walked since my injury! -- when I saw they were fiddling with the wheels for the wheelchair. The wheels have to come off in order to get them in the car and I guess one of them was not on securely. Fortunately, a local detective -- identified by the polo shirt he was wearing as well has a gun holstered under the armpit -- came to the rescue with a wrench in hand and got everything secured so LizAnn could wheel herself across the street without losing one of her wheel chair wheels.Saturday, was an exciting day for both of us. One of the fantastic therapeutic recreational women -- Carol -- offered to open the pool to LizAnn and her guests. We got to go swimming. Well, in my case it was more of a case of learning how to dog paddle again, but it was huge for me to actually be able to do that. The last time I was at Craig, basically someone had to support my body and move me around in the pool. But LizAnn, wow LizAnn! She is definitely going to have to join the Bozeman Barracudas when she gets back. There she is doing laps in the pool. Name the stroke and she did it. With each lap, she improved. She did the backstroke, crawl, butterfly, breaststroke, you name it. And as Carol, the T. Rec Person, pointed out, she was doing this all wearing this really heavy leg brace. Imagine not having the use of your legs and having a lead weight strapped to one of them. I can definitely see a triathlon or some Paralympic races in the future for Liz Ann.After swimming, we headed over to a local used clothing store to go shopping for Liz Ann's Halloween costume. Halloween is a huge holiday at Craig with all the doctors, nurses, nurse techs and patients gettingdressed up. Shopping is actually pretty challenging. The place we went -- Savers -- is cavernous and huge. I think it's an old supermarket. I know that Denise and I were just overwhelmed by the whole size and decibel level of the place. Liz Ann, I think, was too busy shopping to notice. After we got that out of the way, we headed to Boulder for little more shopping therapy. We had fun going up and down the streets of Boulder and going shopping at the Title Nine store. LizAnn and I took over the two dressing rooms. This is a huge step for me because I haven't had the confidence to even try clothes on just because it takes me so long to get dressed and undressed. Being with LizAnn, buoyed my spirits, I figured what the hell. So we all had fun trying on clothes. After a stop at Whole Foods to pick up some staples for LizAnn as well as shop for dinner, we headed back to the Rehab Ranch otherwise known as Craig Hospital. While we were out and about, LizAnn easily did six transfers to and from the car. She's definitely getting stronger and more adept in terms of getting out and about and dealing with ADLs, otherwise known as then activities of daily living. I feel much stronger and happier just having had a chance to see her in action again. Yahoo! Many thanks to Denise, our able-bodied friend. She did all the driving from Bozeman Downs in Denver and back and cheerfully and graciously helped me and LizAnn whenever we needed a helping hand.
- By Jenny McCune 10/20/08

Recent Photos

Here are a few photos from the visit Susan and Merry had with Liz Ann at Craig last weekend.

Humor remains one of Liz Ann’s strong points while she faces the many challenges of rehab. One of the humorous incidents involved a public restroom at the mall where they were all squeezed into the handicapped stall and realized how strange their conversation of the technicalities of “assisting” would have sounded to someone outside the stall.

Keep in mind Liz Ann’s love of humor as you send thoughts, notes, messages, and gifts to her while her rehab continues. Peter Belschwender from OSM has volunteered to head the project. Permits from the city must first be obtained once the scope of the project is determined, then we can come together to remodel Liz Ann’s “digs.” Many of you have expressed interest in helping with the project. If you have skills/resources/time to give then e-mail Peter with a description of your skill level and/or resources so that he can organize the various tasks. Please put Liz Ann’s name in the subject line of your e-mail. PeterBelschwender@onsitemanagement.com

Liz Ann watched the final debate last night. Here are some excerpts from Merry’s e-mail about the weekend:

“We arrived late Saturday morning and spent the whole day just catching up. It was GREAT to see how far she has come since Billings! She looks like her old self with spark in her eyes. She's doing so much independently. She gets herself dressed, bends forward and backward. Wheels herself around, up hills & down.
She educated us on her life at Craig and how to help her. She transferring from one seat to the other almost independently. She likes one of us there just for comfort. We rented a minivan. We thought this would be ok with the wheelchair, but it proved to be very challenging because we had to get her from down low to way up in the back van seat. We did alright, sometimes smoother than others.

At night we went to this quaint French restaurant in Denver called Le Central. It was great to go out and eat good food. Then we all went back to her room. We had a big slumber party, staying up late to catch Saturday Night Live and the Tina Fey skit, which made us laugh all over again! On Sunday we went to the IMAX, the rose gardens and Cherry Creek. It was a cooler day. Liz Ann gets cold in her wheelchair, so we didn't spent a ton of time outdoors.
Liz Ann just rolls with it all, finding the humor in it and laughing until she has tears.
We returned to Craig after a stop at Whole Foods. Susan and I made a delicious salad and we watched DVDs on crazy sled racing and mountain biking with disabled men. It looked very scary.
Liz Ann has had the chance to ride a hand cycle and is very excited about it. She hopes to get one for Bozeman. I'm not sure I'll be able to keep up with her once she takes to the road on that! She is showing she has maintained the "go-getter" attitude and is thinking of all the things she will be able to partake in. It's amazingly cool to learn about what is out there for paras.
It's Monday morning. Susan, Liz Ann, and I had breakfast and are doing the morning routine with Liz Ann. We have a busy day of "classes" to go to, with an hour break for lunch. Liz Ann really is SUPER busy all weekdays. It's a rigorous schedule. She gets up at 6:15, after being woken up at least twice in the night and doesn't seem to hit the hay until after 10. It is easy to see why she doesn't always get the chance to call people back or e-mail them back!”

Yoga Motion Fundraiser a Success

Thanks to everyone who participated in the Open House benefiting Liz Ann on September 27. $1,800.00 was raised for the Benefit Fund. Jen and Ellie joined teaching forces; opened their hearts and shared their love of Pilates and Liz Ann (most of you know Liz Ann is a Pilates instructor). We did all sorts of Pilates stretches and strengthening exercises as one or the other would coach, “Stretch your toes toward Denver…point that leg toward Liz Ann.” Liz Ann’s sister Jane, her two boys (and one of their buddies) took part in the class. We ended with a group meditative heart energy session directed toward Liz Ann and left the gathering full of warmth and loving light. The sun popped out and matched our mood.

Blue sky and sunshine coaxed the vehicles stuffed with folks to the trailhead behind the Bridger Mountains. About forty people bundled up and turned out on a cold blustery grey-sky afternoon for the hike to Sacajawea Peak (the sun went elsewhere…seems it decided to spend the afternoon in Denver). The wind whipped and roared on the ridge, people hung onto the “young’uns.” Four grinning dogs and about 25 people made it to the summit. We called Liz Ann and yelled through the wind “WE LOVE YOU LIZ ANN!” Then we passed the phone around so that everyone could talk to Liz Ann. We munched and shared the hot tea Amy had the foresight to pack along. One hat was lost to a gust of wind. Little Charlie was the youngest to make it to the summit. We met others at the saddle on our way down. A batch of kids were hunkered down just below the ridge to avoid the wind. The ridge was their “summit”… quite an accomplishment in the conditions.

Well over fifty people turned out for yoga later that afternoon. Susie and Anna taught an excellent and beautiful class, beginning with a chant and ending with the group gathering to hold hands and send healing/loving energy to Liz Ann.

Over one hundred people packed into Ale Works for the benefit auction and raffle. The train car portion of the restaurant overflowed with people. Wonderful items were displayed along with photos and a collage of Liz Ann. Many items went for full value or more as people generously bid. Originally the restaurant management had offered to donate all proceeds (above cost) for those who attended the benefit. They told us part-way through the evening that they had decided to offer 30% of their total sales from the evening to the Liz Ann Kudrna Benefit Fund! What an overwhelming show of support from Montana Aleworks and all those who attended the gathering!

Lizann has touched many with her friendship and spirit. The gathering was a heartfelt testament to the quality of kinship in her extensive community of caring friends.

Thank-you for a Supportive Gathering!

(written by Bobbi Jo)

First off, I wanted to extend a HUGE THANK YOU to Mel Koontz and Susie Walby for all their hard and dedicated work organizing yesterday's LizAnn Kudrna Benefit event(s)! The entire day was a wonderful success, overflowing with positive energy, stories, love, and enthusiasm for our dear friend and for eachother. It was a heartfelt example of a truly remarkable community coming together to heal and celebrate.
From pilates in the AM to hiking up blustery Scajawea (had to hold on to the kids, as it felt as though they could get blown away!), to a great relaxing afternoon of Yoga and a remarkable benefit evening in the Aleworks Railcar- the event took on a life of its own. My unscientific estimate would be that there were well over 100 people participating throughout the day. The BIG question many of you are asking.... how much did we raise...? Well the event organizers will get back to you after they and their body guard count the proceeds and deposit them in the coffer. Stay tuned.
Thank you all again for your support in SO many ways. We are really blessed to live in such a wonderful community. We'll have more updates and photo's soon. Best to you all~ Bobbi jo

If you were unable to attend yesterday's events and would still like to contribute to the fund, please feel free to do so. Contributions can be sent to:
First Security Bank
208 E Main St
Bozeman, MT 59715

PS- If you're sore form all your Pilates or hiking, don't forget about next weekends offerings:

Yoga Motion Open House and Fundraiser
Support a Friend... Connect with Community...
Sat., Sept. 27 at YogaMotion
8:30 am - 5:30 pm
We, at YogaMotion, would like to support Liz Ann in any way that we can. Just not quite as responsive. Hopefully I will sleep without interruption tonight and I am wheeling around trying to arrange what I can. John went to stay with friends in Boulder, I am glad he is taking some time.

This has been my busiest week and I have daily gotten my "tuche" (butt) kicked. Last week I had PT and OT everyday and medical stuff. This week I have PT and OT still daily, once a week a chance to talk to Dr. Butt, my psychologist. I adore him. He has worked here I think about 20 years and still is fresh as ever. He set me up with his hairdresser and I got my hair cut today. I can say I feel like a new woman, at least lighter, which by the way I am by about 10 lbs. Weighed in at 110 today. Muscle in my skinny legs was bulkier than ya all thought!

In the stream of consciousness fashion, I continue, also added to my week is fit class 5 time/wk and FES bike 3 times/wk. and a patient education lecture class 4 times this week. Today in fit class we played tennis....I had a blast(when I hit the ball)...watch out Christine Lompa and gang you got some competition! We also do weight lifting and different strengthening activities. Golly, if I worked my upper body this way when I was climbing I would have been keeping up with Meg Hall no problem!

Well I hope this transmits as my computer becomes more unreliable by the day. I wish I could send a personal thank you to each of you for your notes and treats and love. This is the best I can do for now. I feel your love and good wishes and they empower me and remind me that we all have what it takes to do whatever we want. I wish the power of our community could be felt by all of you the way I feel it. It is a small world and we all must take care of each other. I love you for reading and staying connected to me!

- Liz Ann Kudrna

Healing Event this Weekend

Susie Walby is one of the organizers for the “Support the Healing of Liz Ann” event this weekend. If they bid and win the item they will also need to pay shipping.”

Susie’s e-mail address is [susiewalby@gmail.com]

I plan to be there myself and look forward to meeting many of you and sharing healing energy for our beautiful friend during the unique gathering.

Liz Ann has seen the poster for this event and is deeply moved by all the efforts of her friends and caring community.

- Amber Jean

Notes from Joanne's Visit

Joann's notes
Sent: Tuesday, September 16, 2008 12:50 PM

I took off this morning, leaving Liz Ann with a full day of therapy and classes. She was in the process of getting new wheels on her chair, a new smaller seat and more adjustments to make her more comfy both in her brace and in her chair. It's a non stop series of adjustments to accomodate her needs.

There was a lengthy meeting yesterday with every member of her daily team..where they showed us all x-rays, MRI's, catscans of her injury and discussed her treatment plan. The great news - she'll be moving to the other wing as soon as a bed is available. She'll need some additional time to get around with her bulky leg brace on. While there, they'll work on all kinds of skills including spending time in a standing brace, learning to drive and all manner of transport from situation to situation.

John and I are going to work together to shoot a video of her house and the studio and send it to her case worker, along with blueprints so that we can all work on the changes she'll need.
I can say this - every single person I met was just so incredibly committed, open and ready to help in any way. There is a wonderful vibe at Craig and I'm so glad she's there. Moving to the other wing will give Liz Ann some much needed alone time and independence.

Joanne Gardner

A Day at the Museum

We went to the Museum of Science today in Denver, on quite possibly the prettiest day ever in recorded history. We arrived and immediately picnicked near the rose garden overlooking a lake with paddleboats. After some snackage - more of those cookies! - we wandered through the museum and really enjoyed several hours there. Liz Ann diligently does her movement exercises every 15 minutes - to move her body, shift her weight, etc. She looked so wild today - sure she's in a wheelchair and has a hospital bracelet and a body cast. But it's a cheetah body cast over a cute little camisole with some groovy long shorts that let her leg cast peek out. You'll see in the pictures..she was looking great!

Glenn had an opportunity to use one of the docs tickets to a Bronco's game tomorrow, so Liz Ann and I are going to load some photos, get her up and running on Facebook and just help arrange her room with all these new goodies. Her roommate moved to another wing - which is always great.

Literally everyone I've met at Craig is extraordinary. Mostly our girlfriend...but she's in a good place. No, a great place.

I'll keep posting..Joanne

Homemade Cookies and Pot Pie

I spent several hours with Liz Ann yesterday. Feeling a little like Santa with a laden sleigh...I drove down from Bozeman bearing so many gifts from so many people. Of course, our Lizannie tore into the cookies first. But she was so touched by the enormous outpouring of energy and love these bags delivered. People didn't send packages of cookies, they were homemade. The cards so heartfelt, she spends so much time with each one. Please know she appreciates it so much. Not one, but TWO Ipods full of music and great choices on the tunes.

We spent several hours wandering around the grounds. It was a day with patches of sun and we found as many of those as we could and sat in the flower garden enjoying the sun. There was a singer/songwriter performing in the recreation room that we listened to for awhile. Today we (Glenn, Liz Ann and I) are taking her first outing to a museum. Very exciting and a big milestone. The hospital van will drive us and drop us off - on our own for a couple of hours..it will be lovely.

The highlight of the evening was a regular dinner over at the family housing apartment adjacent to the hospital where Glenn is staying this weekend. Merry sent the single most delicious thing I have ever put in my mouth - a homemade chicken pot pie. Glenn made a salad and we sat at a regular table with regular everything listening to tunes and ate ourselves silly. I think the normality of hanging out was really good and after dinner, Liz Ann was tired but very happy.

I'm camping at a groovy camp just 8 miles from the hospital - Cherry Creek State Park right in the middle of town! So, a fire and a cup of coffee and highspeed internet - all the basic needs met.

I'll let you know how today goes...
Love, Joanne

Liz Ann writes an Update

First of all I am overwhelmed and overjoyed with all of the thoughts prayers and gifts from ya all. thank you thank you thank you from the depths of my heart.
You never know how many people care and it definitely helps me through the hard times.
I am happy to say I am off oxygen and no longer have Respiratory Therapy, they just gave me some toys to play with during the day.
I got my IV pulled so that helps in the comfort factor. I got an updated chair so I am at least more independent. I am transferring on my own(I think) but definitely need someone or two around. Actually, I can transfer to the mat from my chair. John and Glenn practiced taking me up and down stairs today, under the eye of my O.T. It was a little scary ...
Last night I didn't even have any drugs before bed so, I was proud,
I had a fun visit from Malcolm Daley, who developed www.Paradoxsports.org
Check it out....also got to meet VJ , the 23 year old stud that had a T5 injury like me and is training for El Cap. She was able to get off oxygen Monday as her lungs are improving. The clots are under control so that she is able to spend increasing amounts of time in a wheelchair (up to 5-6 hours a day). Yesterday she got into a new chair which she can wheel herself around a bit in…a real big boost.

She has begun OT and PT and even some aerobic activity. She described the aerobic machine to me on Sunday as a “Nordic track for her arms.” She said it felt great to be on it. The weather has been sunny and beautiful so she gets outside each day. A volunteer went around and gave patients lemonade and homemade cookies on Sunday. Liz Ann was “cookied up” she said…and thought the gesture was sweet. Her appetite is returning and she’s been eating well.

Craig has been thoroughly investigating Liz Ann’s injuries. She’ll have a bunch more MRI’s of her back and knee this afternoon (now that the swelling has gone down). Next week she will have a conference with her doctor and staff to discuss a detailed diagnosis and plan.

She began the morning sharing a meditation with her brother John. They met with the staff psychologist who’s been there 30-35 years…Dr. Les (short for Dr. Lester Butt). He is very hip and super likeable. Glenn arrived today and will be with her through the weekend. Malcolm is returning to have lunch with Liz Ann today. He’s bringing Vijay to meet Liz Ann. Vijay is a climber who’s spinal injury is at the same vertebrae as Liz Ann. He will attempt El Cap next month (paralyzed from the chest down).

John and Liz Ann are making friends with other patients and their families…amazing stories…and a supportive community.
- Amber Jean

Support Liz Anns Healing

Click on the poster to make larger.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_K4j90I_NOVM/SMgAkmvUztI/AAAAAAAAAQQ/1IWi7BpC1rk/s400/liz-ann-poster-FINAL-flat.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5244442394947276498" />

EVERYONE is welcome...wether you can contibute financially or would like to simply share in the healing with others...join us!

Room 315

Dear friends,

I just returned from Denver and quick visit with Liz Ann and John at Craig Hospital.

I will do my best to relate some of it for you all to get an idea of her environment. I apologize my camera was constantly on the fritz, (ironically enough I think it was busted in the accident) so I didn't get as many photos as I wanted. I hope the few here give everyone a mental picture of Liz Ann's current daily life and help in all the thoughts, prayers and positive energy we are sending her way.

They had just discovered the PE (pulmonary embolism) the evening before so Liz Ann was on 48 hours bed rest, however it made it fortunate for my visit as I was able to spend most of Thursday (Aug 4) and part of Friday with her. Otherwise she would have been in and out of various therapies (which hopefully will start on Monday) making a prolonged visit difficult.

Liz Ann doing arm motion exercises. Due to the PE, she can't do anything that will raise her heart rate.

It was a special day for me to be there again by her side but also to spend time with John, or "Johnny" as Liz Ann calls him. John is providing an incredible amount of attention, support, understanding, compassion, care and love and it was truly wonderful to connect with him.

Johnny and Liz Ann getting some sun.

When I arrived they were in a consultation with Liz Ann's primary doctor, Mark Johansen M.D. or "Dr. J." I immediately liked the man and everyone there continued to talk highly of him throughout my stay. Based on some conversations with other doctors there, Liz Ann is under the care of one of the finest spinal cord rehab docs in North America. Truly.

I was lucky to meet most of the rest of the primary care givers for Liz Ann. Other than the specialist doctors that come over from the nearby Swedish Medical Center, all of the day-to-day therapists and nurses are all part of Dr. J's team and will be with Liz Ann throughout her journey at Craig. They all run around in every day street clothes so you don't get such a clinical feel when they are around. As they say, "We are all in this together." One of the nurses for Liz Ann's roommate Katie is from Great Falls, so she has been especially wearing Montana T-shirts just for Liz Ann and John.

In just a few hours I met Liz Ann's Occupational Therapist Dana,

Liz Ann meeting Dana (below)

her Physical Therapist Rachel, the staff psychologist Dr. Lester B. (who has been there 32 years), her daytime Rehab Tech Amanda and the night shift Tech Kelly (these are the ones that turn Liz Ann every two hours 24/7 to help prevent bed sores and tend to all her other daily functions and are truly incredible, special persons).

Amanda (right) and another Rehab Tech turning Liz Ann.

I also met a Recreation Therapist (these are the ones that will be getting Liz Ann into outdoor activities), a family services counselor and an Orthopedic Surgeon (who will be tending to Liz Ann's injured knee cap, etc), but I don't remember their names. I didn't get to meet Liz Ann's main nurse Laura as she was out for the week participating in some race or event up Pikes Peak.

Physical Therapist Rachel and Liz Ann

I could say more about each of the people I met but in a nutshell, they are all super smart, talented, professional and simply great. Liz Ann commented on everyone that came and went on just how sweet they are and their great energy.

A highlight for all of us is when my long time colleague and friend Malcolm Daly came down from Boulder. Malcolm is the E.D. for an organization called Paradox Sports that works with disabled athletes in a variety of ways (check out the link for more info) but more poignantly Malcolm is simply a wonderful soul and his fantastic energy fired up Liz Ann and all of us in the room. Malcolm told me later that he felt an instant connection to her energy (see photo). Malcolm, John and I went to The Ethiopean Restaurant and had a wonderful meal. Malcolm had a big race he was helping organize the next day between Fort Collins and Boulder so it was extra special that he took time out of his day to spend with us (plus we took a yummy lamb dish back for Liz Ann). Malcolm will certainly be a frequent visitor and inspiration for Liz Ann.

It was also very nice for me to spend time with John. Many of you already know what a great person he is and also that he's just recently returned to good health after several serious injuries and many months of recovery. His strength and compassion are a tremendous source of healing power for Liz Ann. It was inspiring for me just to see them interact on even the smallest things. John's commitment and love has touched me in ways I'm not even aware of yet.

Liz Ann getting a visit from "Secret," an Alaskan Malamute.

Liz Ann had all of your cards and other well-wishes there (prayer flags, flowers, CDs) and was spending time going through them all. Keep them coming! See the sidebar to the right for the address. I can't wait to get back to see her and John soon. Thank you all for your thoughts and care.

Love, Joe Josephson

One hip chica!

Tests and Bedrest

Craig has been very thorough. Liz Ann has been through numerous tests and procedures. The staff at Craig discovered a blood clot in her leg and another blood clot in her right lung. She is receiving treatments to dissolve the clots. She hasn’t been allowed to raise above 30 degrees since they discovered the clots. She believes the clots will be gone by Saturday then she’ll be allowed to sit up again. Deferred pain from her diaphragm causes pain in her shoulder near the clavicle. She’s on pain medication for the shoulder and her broken ribs. She’s very impressed with the staff and care she is receiving, and is thankful to be out of Billings and at Craig.

“I hope I’ll be able to work my butt off with PT next week,” she said optimistically. Yesterday she saw a PT for the first time since her arrival on Tuesday. She said there is also a good recreational PT program at Craig which sounded “fun." She likes her roommate…a cute seventeen year old with some spunk. Her roommate entered Craig 53 days ago after being injured in a car accident (T-boned a semi truck). She sustained spinal injuries and has only partial use of one of her arms and more movement with the other. Liz Ann said yesterday (in light of her roommates situation) that she felt blessed to have gained thirty more years of experience in her own life to sustain her and to get back to.

Her attitude is impressive and humbling.

- Amber Jean

Yoga Motion Open House and Fundraiser

Invitation from Nancy Ruby at Yoga motion:

"Hello sweet Liz Ann and all of you wonderful friends and family.

It is so inspiring to see a community come together with such strength in numbers and intention. Please keep in mind that she is still in the hospital part of Craig (and likely will be for quite awhile) She will be undergoing a procedure to empty the fluid from her left lung today along with other tests. She is likely to be quite tired with the transition yesterday and her days still require a substantial amount of rest and healing. We do not know yet the situation with flowers and food but will let you know.

We want to encourage your continued connection and support while Liz Ann is in Denver. One of the first things John said tonight was, “Liz Ann is in the right place.” He reported that the staff was “immediately upon her.” Nurses and doctors wear street clothes, making the atmosphere feel somehow like they are all in this together, and less “hospital-like.”

She is in the hospital part of Craig right now. Multiple tests…not unlike the first day in ER were performed. The doctor is very thorough. Liz Ann has been having some trouble with her lungs while in Billings, and rather than improving, they seemed to be getting worse. We were told by the staff in Billings that her symptoms were normal for a patient with her injuries. Today a pulmonologist from Craig investigated…chest x-ray and cat scan. Turns out she has a few liters of fluid in her left lung which will be removed in a mini procedure tomorrow (sliding a needle in). More tests will be done tomorrow (Wednesday). The staff has been actively turning her every two hours…just excellent attention and care.

Both John and Liz Ann feel strongly that they are in the right place. The day was busy and long. She’s settled in for the night. We’ll get more details out to everyone soon.

Thanks for your patience.

Amber Jean

Packing Day

Today is packing day. Liz Ann will be off to Craig early tomorrow morning with her brother John. All the many gifts and well-wishes will be packed up. The belongings she needed from Bozeman have already been packed from her home…and yes…for those of you concerned about our little “fashionista”…she is not without jewelry and typical “Liz Ann accoutrements” for her Denver chapter.

She has a massage/energy healing session scheduled today along with her PT and OT.

Once John has a chance to gather more details about the living situation, food, kitchen arrangements etc. in Denver…we’ll let you know of any opportunities to assist long-distance during this phase.

Thanks again,

-Amber Jean

Countdown to Craig

Liz Ann will be leaving early Tuesday morning with her brother John on an air ambulance to Craig in Denver. He will help get her settled into the rehab center. We’ll have more specific information on where to send mail and packages once she’s checked into Craig. Right now it would be best to hold off sending mail to St Vincent’s Hospital. She’ll be at Craig for awhile and will definitely appreciate receiving notes and news from her friends and family while she enters into and progresses through this new challenging chapter.

She had her first shower on Thursday. Thursday night was her best night of sleep so far…actually a very good long deep sleep. Friday morning began with a personal visit in the room by a beautician who gave Liz Ann a pedicure and manicure (all part of the prep for Craig!) She had another acupuncture treatment Friday afternoon after rounds of OT and PT.

Yesterday I received a business-related e-mail from someone who doesn’t know me or Liz Ann personally and has no idea of the events these past two weeks. After the business-bit the e-mail included this PS:

“ PS: Good luck to Jason Pipoly, who's going to attempt to swim an
entire 40 miles down the Hood Canal in Puget Sound this Saturday.
That's awesome in itself, but Jason is paralyzed from the chest
down. Wanna send him an email of good luck? He's at jason@pfitzpr.com”

So I sent him an e-mail and Googled him. He grew up as an amazing inspiring athlete before a car accident resulted in an injury which sounds similar to Liz Ann’s. He was the youngest swimmer to attempt to swim across the English Channel (11 years old…!) He stopped after 17 miles of whitecap, 4 miles short of crossing. He was on Johnny Carson, a cute beefy little kid who walked on stage after his celebrated attempt. He returned years later to become the first American paraplegic to swim across the channel. If you’d like to see more, check out this a inspiring short documentary on You Tube.

I received an e-mail back from Jason’s friend/assistant who said she knew he’d be happy to connect with Liz Ann when she wants to. So…while your sending our sweetie some helpful healing energy today…include some good-energy thoughts for Jason while he swims 40 miles today. Most of these discussions share some common threads... strength, grace, determination, gratitude, inspiration and community to name a few. Despite our diverse backgrounds and how we came to know LizAnn, we all share and offer a beautiful blend of these qualities, something that makes the Bozeman community such a special 'home'. It's also something that makes 'LizAnn's community' so special. Her tragic injury has brought us all together, and together we provide a healing network for our dear friend.

We share a common interest and desire to help, encourage, provide hope, love and support. As she moves on to Craig Hospital for rehab, LizAnn will be gaining strength (there's that word again!), to take on her next set of challenges. She will have time to think about and plan for her new lifestyle and the many decisions ahead. As she learns more about her body and abilities, it will be even more important for us to continue to be there to support her.

Many people have generously offered their skills, time, supplies, and services to help make meals, shovel walks, manage her properties, remodel, drive... these are all things we will need to wait to hear from LizAnn & her family as to how she wants to proceed, then be ready to roll. Please know, these kind offers have provided a true sense of relief and love for LizAnn and her family. We will keep you all posted as opportunities to help present themselves,. Your patience and offers are so appreciated! In the mean time, let's continue to send good energy, prayers & well-wishes her way, stay in touch and prepare to help when the call comes.
- Bobbi Jo

Healing Book

Liz Ann's 'Healing book' was delivered today along with the many cards and gifts folks dropped off at Mendenhall. She had a great acupuncture treatment. She was taken off the IV and the heavy medication which makes her look/feel better on many levels. The date for her to go to Craig has been set for Tuesday, September 2nd. Arrangements have been made for her journey to Denver on an air ambulance…a “door to door” delivery which will be easiest on her.

Jane continues to be the “point person” in charge of visits. Liz Ann is still very tired…healing and dealing on many levels. She cannot have many visits and cannot really handle more than one person at a time right now. Her PT increases each day as she prepares for the intensive Craig rehabilitation. We’ll post a Denver address for her within a few days.

She knows that she has “the troops” behind her and is deeply thankful for your continued good thoughts/energy.
- Amber Jean

Filled with Flowers

We know how much Liz Ann loves flowers. Now we know how many people know how much Liz Ann loves flowers since her room has turned into a colorful jungle spilling beyond the walls with blooms. We’re asking at this point if folks who are thinking about sending flowers would perhaps consider a small contribution to the Liz Ann Kudrna Benefit Fund instead. The room just cannot handle any more flowers. You may still send cards/letters to her at St Vincent’s.

We do not have an admission date for Craig…but we’ll let you know. PT and rest continue to be her main focus. Her days keep her busy and plain tuckered out. She is notably more tired as the chaos of those first days of simply “dealing” has passed. Emotions like waves, visit her in varying degrees. Between the waves she remains determined and proactive…with humor and that great smile. Her focus is on healing and getting strong for the move to Denver.

She has been sleeping better each night. Family members take turns spending the night with her in her room. Today she was able to be outside for awhile in the Peace Garden. The “Healing Book” will be taken to her tomorrow afternoon. Anyone who wants to participate will be able to add to the Healing Book until noon on Wednesday (see details in an earlier post).

- Amber Jean

"Healing Book" - invitation to participate

Liz Ann's friend Bobbi Jo has created a"Healing Book" and invited friends and family to participate. PT and rest will continue to be her focus. Although she has been accepted into Craig, she is on a waiting list. We have not heard yet from Craig when she will begin her PT there. Until then, she will remain at St Vincents…we believe she will be going to Craig in about a week (as you can tell…things change daily…) More later on Liz Ann's travel plans to Denver to begin rehab at Craig Hospital (for information on their spinal cord injury rehab program visit: http://www.craighospital.org/SCI/inpatient.asp).
Her sister Jane is in charge of visits. She has already booked Liz Ann’s visits for this week as she allows only one-or two visitors a day with a focus on professional healing visits. Of course Liz Ann has many friends in body work/healing professions so some of the visits are two-fold, with friends and the intent of healing. Her days are very busy actually. When she is not resting she is busy with rehab and any number of other daily routines, all of which take extra amounts of time at this stage. Only one week ago today she was being flown out of the mountains and to Billings.
I believe personal cards/letters/photos are best at this stage. You may continue to send them to St Vincents. She absolutely loves humor and truly wants to hear how people are living. Photos from your trips, of your children, etc. make her feel good.
You may also leave her messages on her cell phone 406-581-7117. We ask that you consider the overwhelming amount of friends and well-wishers Liz Ann has…
Your patience, love, concern, positive thoughts, well-wishes, and care continue to be greatly appreciated by Liz Ann and her family.
-Amber Jean

Liz Ann's Injuries

Many questions have risen from caring people about the extent/details of Liz Ann’s injuries. She said early on that she wanted people to know the “straight scoop”…so here it is:

She suffered severe fractures to T-5 and T-6…the spinal cord was severed at this point. The vertebrae above and below were also injured , thus the necessity to fuse T-2 through T –9. The surgeon believed the extra rigidity in her spine would help her to maximize movement above the severed spinal cord. She has full use of her shoulders, arms, and hands.

During the accident, she was stepping down some rocks in a gully (she had turned to face toward the rocks) one rock disengaged on top of her chest and her spine was sandwiched momentarily (one second?) between two rocks…so the spinal injury happened immediately, the fall resulted from her inability to use her legs after the spinal injury. During the fall, she sustained several lacerations to her head, bruising and lacerations on her body, and damage to her patellar tendon (on her knee). The tendon was re-attached during surgery Friday afternoon. She has several broken ribs (most likely from the initial rock). Her front teeth were chipped, and her head lacerations have been stapled. They did not have to shave or cut any of Liz Ann’s hair and her teeth will be fixed while she is at Craig in Denver. She has only superficial scabs on her forhead and face.

She asked me Tuesday if she could use the stress-squeeze ball that she noticed I kept in my truck as she wanted to use her hands, work them and was already proactive in her rehabilitation less than 24 hours after arriving at the hospital and before she had been in for surgery on her spine. She uses the squeeze ball often. She continues to do any and all exercises…including some of her own. She has received a few energy healing sessions and plans to pursue other alternative forms of healing.

She scrunches up her face and tries to move the paralyzed parts…those who know her will remember the concentrated “scrunch-look.” That too is part of her own prescribed therapy. She has touched the hospital staff who care for her…they rave behind her back to her family and us about her ability to smile, her humor, and her determination.
-Amber Jean

Update - Sat 8/23/2008 9:26 PM

Liz Ann had a busy day. She was fitted for her leg brace and is very focused on her PT. The PT therapist raved about Liz Ann…impressed with her positive attitude and ability to smile. Liz Ann didn’t think the PT did enough, (at least not as much as the other PT has been doing) so she had me do some more PT with her. She is very focused on rest and rehab...which doesn't give much news...just know that no-news-is-good-news. Liz Ann can “feel the forces” behind her…even if she can’t see you all right now. She is blown away.

Time is quite critical for her recovery and care right now. She has already begun some of her rehab. The sooner she gets to the rehab center, the more she will be able to maximize her movement. Things have been moving swiftly this week, she will be off maybe as soon as Tuesday. Her family is busy with her care, taking care of the details to move her, and taking care of the initial things that need to be done before Liz Ann goes into the rehab center. She has been accepted into Craig. We do not know the schedule yet. Typical to her style, Liz Ann is ahead of the game in her recovery and strength…but she needs all of it and LOTS of rest right now.

We realize it is difficult to feel so much for this bright soul and be able to do so little. You will all be able to help. Liz Ann will need plenty of help when she comes out of rehab (4-8 weeks from now). A caregivers site will be set up down the line, where you can sign up to help with various tasks. Liz Ann’s home will be re-modeled in the next month to be ready for her return from rehab. We will let you know of volunteer opportunities with that project. Fundraisers will happen.

What can you do right now?
• Continue to send her positive energy, thoughts and prayers
• Humor is appreciated (you know how she loves to laugh!)
• Send cards, letters etc. (to the hospital right now…updates on where to send will be on the website and in the e-mail network)
• Make note of your ideas and resources for down-the-line…to share with Liz Ann later…or e-mail them to me.
• Continue to let her friends know about the website (www.lizannkudrna.com) and the e-mail updates so that they can be included in the network.
• Support each other

Last night Liz Ann had her best night of sleep so far. She is focused on one-thing-at-a-time. Right now she needs to recuperate and rehabilitate.
Thanks again for all your outpourings of support. She is defiantly an inspiration (to put it mildly).

-Amber Jean

Fri 8/22/2008 5:02 PM

We realize that we have encouraged visits and phone calls but have decided that Liz Ann really needs her rest right now. Please do not phone her room or visit Liz Ann. She will need her strength after this 2nd surgery, the long week, and she needs to rest up and gather strength before she makes the move to rehab. She may be going to Colorado for rehab as early as Tuesday. You may continue sending cards and letters to the hospital but be aware that at this point she will only be there a few more days. I will continue to print e-mails and she will be able to read posts to the website as well.

Bobbi Jo put it well when she wrote: “We all know how much of a social butterfly she is, and gathers energy and inspiration from friends and family. She made the move in a wheelchair, sporting her new cheetah-print body-cast and a grin (yes…she managed a smile or two despite her intense concentration and bouts of dizziness). She also enjoyed a few minutes outside in the sun while moving from ICU to the new room. When she was settled into her new bed, the PT asked her how she felt and she said, “Good. Dizzy. Actually it was really good to get out of bed.”

Of course Liz Ann is the first person at St Vincent’s Hospital to be sporting a cheetah print body cast.

While she continues to humble us with her humor, determination, and acceptance…her journey will not be without bouts of fear, anger, despair, frustration, and grieving. She had a difficult morning. Some of the initial shock has begun to dissipate and the intense reality and seriousness of her injury is becoming more blaringly real. She mentioned the emotional rollercoaster…and knows she’s in for quite the ride.

Her case worker at the hospital arranged a session with an energy-worker/healer this afternoon. She said it was her gift to Liz Ann. Liz Ann was impressed with the treatment, she really felt the energy work. Other forms of alternative healing and health have been discussed and will be pursued.

She can have flowers and phone calls in her room now:

Phone # 406-237-7522

St. Vincent HealthcareAttn: LizAnn Kudrna- patient #522
1233 N. 30th StBillings, MT 59101

She can also have visitors. We encourage people to see her. We are not sure yet when she will be going to rehab but will most likely be going to rehab out-of-state within a week or so. When visiting, please be conscious of her need for rest.

I will close with one poignant image from the day with Liz Ann…a simple snapshot of her strong tan hand on the glistening chrome of the wheel chair…three bracelets jingling on her tiny wrist…one or two of the bracelets wrapped around the i.v.needle and tape on her arm…cheetah print body cast in the background.
-Amber Jean

Update - August 21, 2008 12:47 AM

Liz Ann really “sparked up” this afternoon according to her brother John. She was able to eat (well…drink some shakes). The food was the first for her since she ate while on the summit Sunday afternoon. She did some rehab today and met with the occupational therapist and the physical therapist. They had her sit up. She has shown amazing strength and is doing exceptionally well in her circumstances (why are we not surprised?) She may be out of the ICU as early as tomorrow evening.

Her family has been diligent and thorough with their research into rehab centers for Liz Ann. Liz Ann talked with Beth Livingston for about 20 minutes today (Beth is a dear friend and well-known paraplegic athlete who lives in Bozeman). Liz Ann’s siblings also talked with other people and friends who have spinal injuries. After discussing the pros/cons and various options, they have a “slam dunk” decision for Liz Ann to go to Craig Rehab in Denver. The center is very intensive and focused on empowering people. John will be setting things up with the center tomorrow (there is a waiting list to get in…we’ll keep you posted).

Liz Ann will be able to have company this weekend and just a few visitors tomorrow and Friday. Please e-mail (or call me 223-6669) if you are interested in going to Billings Thursday as we may have a list of things to bring from Bozeman.

Also…the blog is set to receive your input. The blog is free to use and anyone can upload comments to the site with the simple click of a button. I do not plan to upload your e-mail responses to the site but will continue to print the e-mails and give them to Liz Ann until she is able to access e-mail herself. Updates, links, resources, quick info, etc. will be on the site as a resource for all friends and family.

I accidently deleted the Distribution List for this e-mail group earlier tonight. I believe I set it back up with everybody but if you or someone you know hasn’t been getting the e-mail then direct them back to me to be added again. My apologies. Also…the updates will be posted to the blog so you can check there for any missed updates.
-Amber Jean

Thoughts and prayers from friends

Dear friends,
Click on the comment line below to add your thoughts, prayers and support for Liz Ann. She was in surgery from @ 3:00 - @ 10:00. The neurosurgeon fused her spine with rods from T-2 to T-9, three levels above and below the spinal cord injury. The extensive fusion will increase her rigidity but stabilize her spine in an effort to maximize her upper body mobility. They accessed her spine from the backside and were glad they did not also have to go in from the front.

Liz Ann does not have any feeling from mid-chest down. Right now she is focused on post-surgery healing. She will be able to begin eating. She will have a special body cast made to use when she is in an upright position and will need the cast for about 3 months. ICU nurses have limited visitors to only one at a time. Her brother, two sisters, and Glenn have been taking shifts with her since she came out of surgery and will continue to be there for her during the next couple of days. She will be able to have visitors this weekend.

She is not allowed to have flowers and plants in ICU. We will let you know when she has been moved to a room as we know she will appreciate flowers/plants. She will be in recovery in Billings for at least a week, maybe 10 days. Her family is working together to diligently research options and make a decision with Liz Ann as to where she will go for 10-12 weeks of rehab. Liz Ann does have insurance (many of you have asked).

Cards, etc. can be sent to:

St. Vincent Healthcare
Attn: LizAnn Kudrna- patient ICU#212
1233 N. 30th St
Billings, MT 59101

You can continue to send e-mail messages to me or Bobbi Jo to print and fax to Liz Ann until we set up another system of contact. JoJo and I will set up a blog this afternoon. We believe this may be the best way for everyone to keep in touch, support each other and Liz Ann during this journey. The extensive impressive network of friends Liz Ann has is a testament to the character, beautiful soul, and inspiring bright light she has been for so many.

Thank-you for sending such caring energy.

Amber Jean

Update - August 19, 2008 6:26 pm

Liz Ann is currently in surgery.

Typical to her character and ability to focus and align herself for challenge, she chose to listen to a meditation tape prior to the surgery. Her sister Kristen arrived this afternoon and was able to see Liz Ann along with a number of her friends. Her brother, her sister Jane, and her fiancé Glenn have been with Liz Ann since yesterday. An update of her post-surgery prognosis will be sent later tonight or first thing in the morning along with an address for a place to send cards and letters of support.

Liz Ann has an impressive extensive number of friends and supporters, many of you have been forwarded messages through friends. I have just put together an official “mail group” to keep everyone updated. If you would like to be added directly to the list just e-mail me (amber@amberjean.com). If you would like to be removed from the list, then e-mail me at the same address. Feel free to continue to simply forward e-mails to others if that works best for you.

I will paste the first two e-mails describing Liz Ann’s accident and updates below in case you have just requested to join the group and have not received the previous e-mails. Liz Ann deeply appreciates your continued support and positive energy.

Thank-you

Amber Jean

Update August 18, 10:32 pm

Monday 8/18 10:32 pm

We know Liz Ann to be both an exceptionally gracious and admiringly straight-forward person. She wishes for her friends to be kept appraised of her diagnosis without any “fluff.” Per her request… the straight scoop:

Liz Ann’s spinal cord has been completely severed between T-5 and T-6. There is no need for emergency surgery. She will undergo surgery tomorrow afternoon at St. Vincent’s in Billings at @ 3 pm to stabilize her spine and excavate bone shards. They will be prepping Liz Ann @ 1:00. Her sister Jane and brother John were with her when the neurosurgeon gave Liz Ann his prognosis. Liz Ann was not surprised and admitted that she had very purposely stayed awake during the bright nearly full moon night on Mt Cowen to fully experience the beauty since she knew she would never be back there again.

Liz Ann can actually receive visitors tomorrow mid-morning for awhile. Anyone is welcome. She will not likely be up to having visitors for at least a few days after the surgery. I will send an update with more details after I return from Billings tomorrow. You may also phone me and I will pass along any personal messages you have (223-6669).

Those of us involved closely with her these past days continue to be humbled and deeply admire Liz Ann’s strength and clarity.

She is appreciative and aware of your outpouring of support.

Amber Jean

Accident Account, 08/18, 4:22 pm

Following is an email Amber Jean sent out to friends on Monday August, 18th 4:22 pm
(edited slightly for this post)

Liz Ann was injured in a hiking accident yesterday (Sunday, August 17) while descending Mt Cowen in the Absaroka/Beartooth Range. She had summited Mt Cowen around 1:30 PM with Jo Jo (Joe Josephson) and Leslie Bahn (friend from Jackson/Bozeman) via the classic Northeast Ridge route. After a euphoric summit celebration, the party navigated the ledges and were hiking down the steep decent gully.

Jo Jo was first, Leslie 2nd, and Liz Ann 3rd….they were near the end of the gully. Liz Ann dislodged a large (TV-size) rock which hit her in the chest and smashed her against another rock, after which she plummeted head-first into another rock and continued to free-fall. Jo Jo was directly below her and was able to leap into her path in a successful attempt to position himself under Liz Ann and protect her head. They tumbled together and came to a stop. Jo Jo’s injuries were superficial (broken nose). Liz Ann sustained head, chest and back injuries. She never lost consciousness and was both cognizant and alert during the whole situation. The accident happened approximately at 2:30 P.M at about 10,600 feet.

Leslie went for help while Jo Jo stayed with Liz Ann. Leslie managed to quickly negotiate several thousand feet of difficult terrain around snowfields, rock slabs and waterfalls to reach Elbow Lake at 8,500 feet. There she left a note for two friends, Dustin Gaines and Pete, with whom they shared a camp at Elbow Lake. Leslie then ran eight miles out to the Trailhead. Leslie was able to phone 911 at 6:22 PM when she emerged from Mill Creek canyon into cell phone range. Leslie contacted me as well, and I was able to contact Pat Callis of the Gallatin County Search and Rescue mountaineering unit. A full rescue was quickly launched which involved 3 agencies.

Dr. Alan Orem, an experienced mountain rescue medic and ER doc, was air-lifted and left below the accident scene just as it was getting dark. He was able to join Liz Ann and JoJo after an hour of climbing. Liz Ann was in stable condition, but it was dark, and so the helicopter efforts were postponed until daylight. JoJo and Alan dug out a platform and moved LizAnn into a sleeping bag that Alan had brought so she'd have a more comfortable place to spend the night. A SAR team of seven were sent in by foot last night to camp at Elbow Lake and assist in the a.m. Meanwhile, Dustin and Pete discovered Leslie's note upon returning to camp at 8:30 after 16 hours of climbing a different route near Elbow Lake. They immediately headed back up the mountain with four sleeping bags and a stove and climbed several hours up to the gully where Liz Ann, JoJo and Alan were. Dustin and Pete's effort was critical as they were able to make hot water bottles to help keep Liz Ann warm in the sleeping bag. Dustin and Pete also happen to be master trail builders and got busy early in the morning to build a shelf to give the helicopter medic an insertion point as close as possible to Liz Ann. Shortly before the helicopter arrived, they all "packaged" Liz Ann into the vacuum splint Alan lugged in. This becomes completely rigid acting as a backboard and was critical since due to the weight and elevation, the helicopter would have had a difficult time reaching them with a separate backboard and litter.

Once the helicopter and medic arrived from Yellowstone National Park, all five of them worked together to put Liz Ann onto a "Scoop" (a collapsible board) and a "Bowman Bag" (a large canvas bag with straps and harness that attaches to the short line underneath the helicopter). This all took about 8 minutes after which Liz Ann and the medic, Blake Chartier, were short-hauled to the staging area (Mill Creek and East River Road intersection). The air ambulance was waiting for her to take her to Billings and left about 10:30 this morning. Liz Ann’s brother John was there to see her. Leslie and I talked with Liz Ann as well. She was very much alive, alert, and together.

Liz Ann’s head wounds are superficial…and one chipped tooth (they’ve already stapled her up). The neurosurgeon has confirmed pretty significant compression fractures on T-5 and T-6. Liz Ann has not had feeling or movement from her waist down since the accident occurred yesterday. They will be operating tonight or tomorrow. The good news is that the CT scan is good…no brain hemorrhage. There is no thoracic or abdominal hemorrhage. We do not want to jump to conclusions about the rest of her prognosis.

She is a super fit, amazingly strong woman who has an impressive large network of friends. John is dealing with the family and Liz Ann’s direct care. Her sister Jane was in California and will be arriving in Billings this evening. Her other sister will arrive tomorrow. Glenn (her fiancé) is on his way to Billings and will arrive this evening. Questions, concerns, and well-wishes can be directed to me (222-9251 or 223-6669) or Mary Lee (587-4925). Please do not call the hospital or John. Bobbi Jo will be in charge of an e-mail network for friends. We will do our best to keep everyone updated. Right now, the family would rather have us field calls and have asked that we do not travel to Billings until further notice (she may even be moved elsewhere…we will keep you posted).

Both Leslie and Jo Jo are experienced climbers with training in wilderness first response and rescue. Liz Ann was very lucky to be with the two of them as well as the two climber friends who happened to be in the area at the time of the accident. The night was warm and calm, the rescue efforts well-coordinated, and other factors entered in for which we can be grateful. (the rescue is the largest scale, most difficult terrain experienced in this county (and Gallatin). Mt Cowen is remote, high elevation, and rugged. The rescue took about 19 hours which is actually pretty good considering the extreme terrain and remoteness. Time was not a factor in Liz Ann’s injuries.

We all know Liz Ann is spirited and strong. She needs our positive energy. E-mails will be printed and given to her in intervals…hopefully we will all be seeing her soon as I know you all love her and want to help see her through this.

We believe e-mail will be an efficient way to keep everyone in the loop but do not hesitate to call.
Amber Jean
